Why do we actually celebrate Valentine's Day on February 14?

Contrary to the claim that Valentine's Day is an invention of flower sellers, the day of lovers has a truly romantic background.

Valentine's Day day of love

There are more theories about the origin of Valentine's Day than reliable answers. Mostly, however, it is attributed to St. Valentine

In the 3rd century AD, Roman soldiers were forbidden to marry. Valentine of Terni, a bishop, defied the ban and married many couples in the church.

For the wedding ceremony, couples received a bouquet of flowers from the bishop's garden.

Legend also has it that these marriages were particularly happy and lasted a particularly long time.

On February 14, 269, Valentine was beheaded by order of Emperor Claudius II - that is why he is still considered a martyr today, because he died for his faith. Since the 15th century, February 14 has been "Lovers' Day" in England. The day is celebrated with fertility rituals and flowers for the partner.

As the "saint of tenderness", Valentine is therefore still the patron saint of lovers and the namesake of our current Valentine's Day.

Curious actions for singles and anti romantics on Valentine's Day

Since not everyone is permanently on cloud nine and wants to celebrate the same in a happy relationship, there are plenty of bizarre activities for singles and romance haters around the world.

A Texas zoo, for example, offers spurned couples the chance to name a cockroach after their ex-partner. On Valentine's Day, the cockroach is then fed to a meerkat during a Facebook Live video.

In big cities, there are usually more "anti-Valentine's Day parties." Not only singles celebrate there, but also couples who don't feel like the consumer battle of the day.

In the sign of love, marathons have also been organized in various countries on February 14. Sporty couples and singles could really work out instead of filling their stomachs with a calorie rich dinner.
